My Top 5 The Call Songs

The Call were one of my favorite bands from the late 80's. They were one of the first bands that I did not really know from MTV but first heard when I started listening to HFS. Lead singer Michael Been died in 2010. His son, Robert who is the lead singer for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club has been performing with the remaining members for a series of shows.

My Top 5 Queen Songs

As I go thorough my music collection, I find artists that I take a break from but always come back to. Queen is one of those bands, They easily are one my top 2 or 3 bands of all time but how do I stray away for such long periods? I don't have an answer. I'm back and feel like I should have never left, Anyway, this was my most difficult one yet. Here it is. I left off a bunch but gave them credit at the end.

My Top 5 The Psychedelic Furs Songs

 My blog has reached 40,000 today. For that occasion, I decided to do a post on one of my all time favorite bands. The Psychedelic Furs were one of the first bands that really struck a chord with me back in the early days of MTV. Richard Butler's voice was very different from any other singers at the time. They clearly had roots in punk rock but combined that perfect keyboard sound that was a huge part of early new wave music. It was very hard to pick these but here they are.

My Top 5 The Clash Songs

I didn't know much about The Clash when they first came out. When my music tastes started changing towards alternative music in the early 80's I first noticed them. Their last "real" album was a huge MTV hit. I then went back like many Americans and listened to their earlier albums They were way ahead of their time and only released 6 albums.

My Top 5 Cheap Trick Songs

 Today is Robin Zander's 60th birthday. Cheap Trick has always been one of my favorite bands. I put them in the Hall and Oates category in that they had a lot of success but not ever put in the all time greats category by the "experts". In the grand scheme of things, I don't care. Music has never been about what is cool, just what I like. Cheap Trick was an odd success story in that they released a bunch of stuff that failed to chart. They ultimately hit it big with a live version of a previously released song. Their initial success was in Japan. Once that song hit it big, many of their previous songs became "known".

My Top 5 Police Songs

 The Police were an amazing band. They released 5 studio albums and were only around from 1977 to 1984. The had almost no success in the US until their 3rd album. Now every song in their catalog seems to be a hit. They officially broke up in 1986. I loved this band so much that I really had a hard time with this list. My first 2 records I ever bought were The Police "Zenyatta Mondatta" and AC/DC "Back in Black".

My Top 5 Led Zeppelin Songs

My good friend Todd posted a Led Zeppelin song tonight. It got me thinking about how much I have grown to appreciate them as I've gotten older. I wasn't a huge fan when they were still an active band. I think I was still too young. As I have gotten older, I have gone back and listened to older artists like Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks and of course Led Zeppelin. When I first started really listening to Led Zeppelin, it was a great experience. It was like they were a new band to me. Amazing.

My Top 5 Rolling Stones Songs

There has always been a debate as to who was better, The Rolling Stones or The Beatles. I personally love them both and think it's ridiculous to compare the two bands but that's another thing that makes music so great. My Top 5 Hall and Oates Songs

 Hall and Oates are one of my 3 favorite bands/artists of all time along with Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House , Solo)  and Counting Crows. There was a stretch from the late 70's to the early 90's where everything they released was a hit. Voices is, in my opinion, their greatest album. I was always a bigger fan of their songs that had a new wave rock feel to them. Voices had that throughout.
They continue to tour and periodically, release new material.

My Top 5 Psychedelic Furs Songs

 The Psychedelic Furs are another one of my favorite bands. Formed in 1977 by lead singer Richard Butler and his brother Tim. They started out with a very punk garage sound and later moved towards a new wave sound. They had several hit songs in the early MTV days but really hit it big when their re-recorded version of "Pretty In Pink" was used in the John Hughes movie of the same name. Surprisingly they only had 1 US Top 40 hit and that was "Heart Break Beat". They broke up for about 10 years and Richard Butler scored a few hits with the band "Love Spit Love". They continue to tour but have yet to release a new studio album. Here is my top 5

My Top 5 New Order Songs

New Order was created in 1980 by the remaining members of Joy Division after the death of lead singer and songwriter, Ian Curtis. Starting as a goth sounding guitar oriented band, they gradually evolved to a mainly electronic sound. Although they never achieved the superstar status of other 80's bands like The Cure and Depeche Mode, they were very successful. I seemed to like their guitar based songs the most.

My Top 5 INXS Songs

INXS is one of my all time favorite bands. I think they would still be making good music today if Michael Hutchence hadn't died so young. The rest of the band were just as much a part of their success as Michael but there is no way they can do anything that comes close to their first 10 albums with another lead singer. Here is my top 5.

My Top 5 REM Songs

 Wow, the last post, of U2 songs has taken off but not for the reasons I expected. It seems that people are very passionate about U2,  some for their love of the band but also for their hatred of the band. Either way, it started some great conversation on Facebook. I will now move on to the next band, REM.
REM is another band that had their "cool unknown" faze, their "move to super stardom" faze and then their "no one seems to care and bored with them" faze. Here is my top 5. Jeff Walter, get ready.

My Top 5 U2 Songs

My Duran Duran post was my most viewed post to date. Not bad for a "Boy Band". Let's see how U2 does. U2 has sold 150 million album since 1980. They went from obscure bar band to one of the biggest selling bands of all time. Every tour gets bigger and bigger. Here's my top 5.

I thought The Cure would have been the biggest one of these posts, then I did Depeche Mode and it was bigger. Now let's see how Duran Duran does. They've been around for a long time and since they started so young, are still young dudes. They have put out some really good CD's in the last few years (Red Carpet Massacre is one of them). In keeping with my "Top Songs From a Band or an Artist", I decided to go with Depeche Mode. This is another band that went from obscure band to one of the biggest bands of the 80's and 90's. Their early stuff sounded like guys messing around on a Casio keyboard and within a few years they were a huge synth rock band. Here is my list.

So my last post was so popular, I figured I would keep it going with "The Cure" this time. This one was really hard. I am a huge fan of The Cure and they had so many great songs that I can easily see people not including any of these in their top 5.

My Top 5 Smiths Songs

My good friend Bob "The Wheel" Popik has been getting on me for not including any Smiths Songs on my blog. He's the DJ at Camden Yards so if you ever hear The Smiths or Morrisey while taking in an Oriole Game, that is why. He's obsessed with them.
Back to my blog. I love the Smiths so I'm not sure how they haven't appeared in any of my lists. That being said, I also have not had any Depeche Mode or Led Zeppelin and they are both 2 of my favorite bands. Here are my favorite Smiths songs.
