Todd is another longtime friend that I met while working at Listening Booth back in the mid 80's. He's always leaned towards the classic rock side but also a more introspective side. I love when my friends write little blurbs for each song. This is how you do it. Love it.
20 The Who - It’s Your Turn
John Entwistle wrote some good songs for the band and this one. Basically it’s Entwistle warning and challenge to the younger bands coming up trying to take the Who's place...I also look at as just an older guy talking to a younger guy like " Good luck kid, it’s a jungle out there…"
19 Bruce Springsteen – Johnny Bye-Bye
A B-side, he had to give Chuck Berry partial writing credit because he quotes Chuck’s song “Bye Bye Johnny”
18 Pink Floyd - Take it Back
A beautiful tune written by David Gilmour with his wife Polly and Nick Laird-Clowes of the Dream Academy.
A song that could be interpreted to be about taking someone for granted, but also it seems to be intended to be about taking the planet for granted.
The “she” being Mother Nature.
17 Fleetwood Mac – What Make You Think You’re The One
Lindsey Buckingham always says his first solo album is really contained within “Tusk” as he played most of the instruments on cuts like this.
16 The Police - Wrapped Around Your Finger
Only Sting could make a rowdy teen look up Carl Jung and Mephistopheles
15 Jackson Browne - Hold On Hold Out
I must confess. When I was 14 and really depressed from family problems I used to listen to this song for inspiration. David Lindley’s lap steel playing is one of the most beautiful sounds I’ve heard in my life .
“You’ve done your time on the bottom line, it ain’t no thrill…”
14 Warren Zevon - Numb as a Statue
Warren Zevon made this album as he knew was dying of cancer. Amazing. Once again David Lindley on the lap steel…
13 Big Country - Just a Shadow
A song about not living up to one’s potential, and maybe being under appreciated….
12 The Rainmakers - In Small Circles
Some of the best lyrics ever… How sometimes we can make changes too fast and too often end up in places we don’t like; with people we don’t care about… We can start to miss the ones we did care about…
11 Don Henley - New York Minute
Another great song about loss, regret and the search for redemption and relief.
“The wolf is always at the door
10 Pink Floyd - High Hopes
Another amazing David Gilmour song written with his wife Polly. Another song about regret, loss and unfulfilled potential with nods to former PF leader Syd Barrett.... I’m sensing a theme here..
9 Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Dude took a sparse Dylan song and turned it into an awesome rock tune with one of the best guitar solos ever.
8 Eric Clapton - Holy Mother
very soulful, gospel vibe. Phil Collins on drums
7 The Firm – Spirit of Love
Paul Rodgers and Jimmy Page were in two of the greatest bands of all-time (Bad Co, and Led Zeppelin) and I choose this? yup. A great song about survival , self preservation and, simply, belief in the self
6 The Eagles – Pretty Maids All in a Row
Joe Walsh writes amazing ballads
5 The Eagles – The Last Resort
Basically about how we’ve overdeveloped and the harmed the environment.
“Call some place paradise, kiss it goodbye”….”there is no new frontier, we have got to make here”
4 Don Henley - A Month of Sundays
Maybe the greatest B-side of all-time!
An incredible song about how our world changes; technology; greed, banks & corporations have taken over.. still rings true…
3 Don Henley – Boys of Summer
Music written by Mike Campbell from The Heartbreakers.
Overplayed, but this song captures the mood of loss as well as any I’ve ever heard.
Loss of innocence, loss of youth, and of course loss of love... He’s not going to give up.. but she not’s coming back….
2 The Rolling Stones - Memory Motel
One of the greatest ballads of all time. When Keith sings his part it’s just one of the greatest things ever…
1 The Who - Won’t Get Fooled Again
If aliens landed and asked me in that monotone- robotic voice they always seem to have “What is rock n Roll?” I would simply play them this…
