1 Song With Lyrics Volume 2 (Joe Jackson - Be My Number 2)

This is number 2 in a series of posts focusing on the lyrics to a favorite song of mine.

Joe Jackson - Be My Number 2

I heard this song for the first time in a long time the other day while driving.  I played it a few more times. There aren't many lyrics to this song but it's amazing how moving they are. It's about a person who is out of a relationship and now in a new one. It talks about how the songwriter is telling the new person that they aren't as important as the other person and that they are just here to make the songwriter feel better.
It's been a long time since I had to think about stuff like that and I hope I never do. I have my number 1 now and I can't imagine how I would feel I didn't have her any longer. It just goes to show how a pained person generally writes better songs.

Won’t you be my number two
Me and number one are through
There won’t be too much to do
Just smile when I feel blue

And there’s not much left of me
What you get is what you see
Is it worth the energy
I leave it up to you

And if you got something to say to me
Don’t try to play your funny games on me
I know that it’s really not fair of me
But my heart’s seen too much action

And every time I look at you
You’ll be who I want you to
And I’ll do what I can do
To make a dream or two come true
If you’ll be my
If you be my number two
